Dear Parents,
Last evening around 7:00 we learned that one of our students had received a message on Snapchat saying not to go to school tomorrow because there was going to be a shooting. We immediately contacted our SRO, who brought the State Police in. We knew nothing else at that time and waited while the State Police did their investigation. We then put out a message to our families to provide all the information we had at that time. At approximately 1:00 A.M. State Police notified us that the author of the Snapchat message was in West Clairton, Ohio and they did not believe this to be a credible threat. They stated that they would have troopers at both schools this morning. Based on this information, we decided at 1:00 to go ahead with school. At 7:00 this morning, we were informed that the message received by our student, which did not name any school, was first received by another student in a different part of the state. Apparently several other Pennsylvania schools have been put through this wringer as well. Once we learned this, we put out the message that there was no threat because that is what the investigation determined.
We apologize for any confusion that the late nature of this incident caused. We always keep the safety of our students first in our minds, and we tried to keep everyone informed as we went along. Many parents kept their children at home today, and that is understandable. We will excuse all students who were absent today. I want to thank the student who came forward with the message, and encourage all students to make adults aware of any type of threat they receive over social media. Anonymous tips can be reported through the Safe2SaySomething system making it easy and confidential to report safety concerns to help prevent violence and tragedies.
